Other
emergency responders such as fire, police
and REMSA would be able to call up a virtual
tour of the building on a laptop computer
and know the complete layout of the site.
When responding to an emergency, they would
know exactly where everything in the building
was located; including all emergency shutoffs,
gas and water lines and electrical panels.
A few clicks of a mouse would take them
anywhere in the facility or on the site.
School Police Chief Mike Mieras said that “When emergency
responders arrive at a school, they are often unfamiliar with the
layout of the building. Having this information at their fingertips
will save precious time and allow them to do their job better and
faster. Without doubt, this new technology could end up saving
lives and protecting property."

“The
School Readiness & Emergency Management
grant provided for many other preparedness
projects, for example, the funding allowed
the district to hire Chris Smith, a vice-principal
at Sparks High School, to serve as the
grant coordinator, “said Chief Mieras. “Smith's
job was to coordinate the activities of
the contractor and to involve the other
local law enforcement agencies including
both the Sparks and Reno police and fire
departments and the Washoe County Sheriff's
Department.”

Mieras
went on to explain that since Smith was
hired in January of 2006, the WCSD Police
Department and Office of Emergency Preparedness
have started working with other agencies
to help in the development of "an
integrated, community-wide approach to
emergency planning."
Other important components of the grant that was completed
by Visual Imagry and their associate and plan developer Renee
Domingo, was a safety survey and audit of each school's emergency
plan. Ms. Domingo worked with Visual Imagry in standardizing
the emergency plans and developed emergency preparedness
trainings.
Visual Imagry, Inc. also developed a secure web site for
the District designed to become an interactive tool for building
an extensive network for disaster planning, preparing, training,
communicating or responding to any school threat or emergency.
This secure web site operates separately and independently
of any WCSD web site and does not require District IT support.
“The
grant program was designed to provide
funds to strengthen and improve the WCSD
emergency response and crisis plans,
at the district and school-building level," said
Smith. “The grant has provided
the necessary funding to help with our
crisis planning efforts for prevention
and mitigation, preparedness, response,
and recovery.”
Visual
Imagry completed their portions of
the project in May and delivered
and installed the HTML preplans on
June 1, 2007. The HTML preplans were
developed using VIPlanning® Software.
